Police Officer of the Year Award
Patrol Officer Robert J. Beveridge, Sr. CPD Second Neighborhood District
The Cleveland Division of Police has a proud and storied history. Since the founding of the Western Reserve, our region is fortunate to have men and women brave enough to put their lives on the line to ensure safety in the community.
Tonight, we are honored to recognize the exemplary service of one of Cleveland’s Finest, Patrol Officer Robert J. Beveridge, Sr.
PO Beveridge was born and raised on Cleveland’s west side, eventually moving with his family to Lakewood, and graduating from Lakewood High School in 1983. He then attended the Electronic Technology Institute and graduated with an associate degree in electronics.
Having been raised with two qualities instilled within him by his parents, integrity and a strong work ethic, he entered the work force. Following in his father’s footsteps, he eventually took a job at LTV Steel.
In 1987, while thinking about getting married and starting a family, he voiced concern about raising children in a challenging world to his father. He received an answer in the form of a challenge. Why not be one of the ones who change the world for the better? After mulling over that sage advice, he decided to become a police officer, something he thought about since childhood.
Taking entrance exams in the region, fortunately for the citizens of Cleveland, and especially the 2nd District, he became a Cleveland Police Officer. He entered the 110th Police Academy Class in 1994 and upon graduation was assigned to the near west side district.
During the past 21 years, PO Beveridge has worked in Basic Patrol and the Community Services Unit, becoming known to people on the street as a hard working and dedicated officer… one who is vigilant, fair, and a guy you could talk to. People in the community started calling him “Big Nose” and “Nose,” not for any semblance to that of the likes of WC Fields, but because of his reputation for finding out what’s going on in the neighborhood.
“Big Nose” has received outstanding evaluations from his superiors and scores of commendations for excellent police work, including two Distinguished Service Medals, both for his work in solving two separate homicide investigations in which a total of three people were murdered.
His efforts led to the arrest and conviction of all suspects in both cases.
When asked to reflect on his career he replied, “During my 21 year career, I had the privilege to meet and earn the respect and trust, of business owners, citizens, and community leaders in my district. Because of this I believe I became the best community policeman I could be.”
In recognition of his dedication to community service, commitment to excellence and making our corner of the world a safer place, it is our honor to name PO Robert J. Beveridge, Sr. as the Cleveland Police Foundation 2015 Police Officer of the Year.
