Two events were held this summer brought police officers, volunteers and kids together to enjoy each other’s company and do a little fishing. The outings provided the opportunity to have some fun, get to know each other and learn to work together. We’re not sure who had a better time, the police officer and volunteers who mentored the kids, or the kids who were introduced to the sport.
Fishing Outings Are A Big Splash
On August 8th, the CPD Bureau of Community Policing, PAL & Cops For Kids programs partnered with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Police Department, and The Passion For Fishing program to sponsor an event at Wade Lagoon in Rockefeller Park on the City’s east side. In cooperation with the City of Cleveland Recreation Centers 135 kids and 31 adults from throughout the city joined with 24 volunteers and police officers in an afternoon of learning to fish. The kids were provided with free fishing rods & reels, backpacks from CareSource, t-shirts, food & beverages. Everyone in attendance had a great time.
Cops and Kids Fishing Outings Sponsorship Opportunity: $1,000.00 per outing. In addition to recognition in the CPF newsletter, website, Facebook and signage, sponsors can also two representatives join the crew for the day. If you are interested in sponsoring one of the outings and joining the crew, please contact our Executive Director of Community Partnerships, Charles W. On August 13th, 22 kids from the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland were treated to a fishing excursion on Lake Erie on the “Holiday” charter boat. Shipping out from Edgewater Yacht Club, fishing was a bit limited due to the weather conditions, but the kids and crew were treated to a tour of the harbor and Cuyahoga River. The kids, most whom had never been on a boat had a great time along with the POs who were on-board to show them the ropes. No one got seasick, and another great youth outreach event is in the books.
Back on dry land, the kids were treated to the opportunity to meet and talk with more police officers and their canine and equine partners, sit on the police motorcycles, and meet Mayor Frank G. Jackson who joined them for lunch.
Our thanks to all who contributed to the Cleveland Police Foundation, the Edgewater Yacht Club, The Holiday Charter Boat and to the many volunteers who helped to make this event possible.
If funding can be obtained, our hopes are to host as many as eight such events next summer and the opportunity to reach out to more kids.
