As noted in comments made by Board member Woods King at the recent Anisfield Book Awards, the Cleveland Police Mounted Unit has an impeccable hundred year history as one of the premier police mounted units in the nation.
When a well-known Cleveland Police Captain was asked why officers on horseback were interacting with residents, he was quick to respond, “The Cleveland Police understand the importance of community policing. The Mounted Police Unit leads the way as a symbol of connecting the Cleveland Police Division with the community. It is its number one goal.
Between 2003 and 2012, the Mounted Police Unit was on the verge of being eliminated. It was only through the support of the Committee to Save the Mounted Police, the formation of the Cleveland Mounted Police Charitable Trust, and private donations that the unit was able to survive. Now, with the City of Cleveland on a better financial footing, public and private supporters are committed to a continued renaissance for the Mounted Unit. The Cleveland Police Foundation is proud to be a supporter of the Mounted Unit.
