The Cleveland Job Corps at 13421 Coit Road was the location for annual Fifth District Community Relations Awards Ceremony. A fine crowd turned out for this occasion to honor police officers, and citizens that have gone beyond the call of duty while performing their jobs. I was also there representing The Cleveland Police Foundation to present our Community Service Awards to Lt. Michael Butler, Ms. Jan Dean, and Mr. Thomas Smith, of the Thomas G. Smith Funeral Home. Lt. Butler was chosen for displaying both character, and personality in effectively leading his platoon, and providing service to the Fifth District Community. Ms. Dean, has committed her time, effort and energy into a particular course of action, and that is to improve the quality of life for the residents of the City of Cleveland. I have personally known Ms. Dean for over 30 years and she is one special lady. The Thomas G. Smith Funeral Home was selected for their experience, and dedication while handling even the most difficult of situations including funeral services for community leaders, dignitaries, and families in need of special assistance. Congratulations to all the award winners, and thanks to all that attended including Mayor Frank Jackson, Safety Director Michael Mcgrath, and Chief Calvin Williams.
