Thank you WKYC Channel 3 – Cleveland and Margaret Bernstein for not only helping CPD and the Cleveland Police Foundation with our Little Free Library Project, but for promoting the project on Channel 3 News and on Live on Lakeside with Holly and Michael. We had a great time and got our message of literacy and community policing out to the world.
How important is it for police to promote literacy? Statistics show that 2/3 of school aged children who do not read proficiently by the 4th grade will either end up in the justice system or on welfare. Nearly 85% of all children currently in the juvenile justice system are functionally illiterate. Literacy rates will have a direct effect upon our safety in the future.
