Mounted Unit Horses: The Hard-Working Bas and Nimo

Nimo and Bas

Nimo and Bas

From the medieval knights crusading to the Holy Land to Hollywood movies, comes a remarkable breed of horses, the Friesian. The Cleveland Police Mounted Unit is proud to stable two, Bas and Nimo.

Both horses are from the Friesian Empire and Equine Center in Westerville, Ohio, just north of Columbus. They were donated anonymously in the Fall of 2015. Nimo was born there, but Bas is from the Netherlands, where the breed was developed in the province of Friesland in the Middle Ages.

PO Cortez rides Nimo and Bas is ridden by PO Sieger. You are apt to see one on weekend nights patrolling the Warehouse District.

The horses of the Mounted Unit are hard-working and don’t retire until 20-25 years old. Four patrol officers and one sergeant, plus helpers, make up the staff at the unit. To help fund the horses, please donate to the Cleveland Police Foundation and specify Mounted Unit. Thank you!
