School and Campus Shooting Awareness by James T. McBride and Gregory Truhan

 

James T. McBride and Gregory Truhan have co-authored a new book about school and campus shootings titled “K-PhD School and Campus Shooting Awareness.”

The authors combine seventy years of law enforcement experience with academic expertise to address the preventability of targeted mass-shootings directed at victims in learning environments at all levels K-PhD.

The book includes a summary of school and campus shootings in America, an analysis of incident commonalities and historical insights into and social dimensions of school and campus violence. It also contains US Secret Service research relating to behavioral intelligence, threat assessment, risk management and interventions, as well as Ohio’s best security and safety practices relating to these types of emerging threats. Finally, there are ten recommendations from the authors.

James T. McBride formerly served as a college Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police who sat on Ohio’s Campus Safety Task Force and IACLEA’s Two Year College Task Force. He is a Certified Law Enforcement Executive (CLEE) who graduated from Youngstown State University (1969) before earning an MPA degree from Cleveland State University. He is an experienced campus safety assessor with IACLEA’s LEMAP program, teaches criminal justice at Lakeland Community College and has authored a number of journal articles on law enforcement, public safety, campus safety and homeland security. He is also a certified crisis intervention specialist, police academy training commander, and peace officer.

Upon retiring from the federal service with over 20 years of experience, he now serves as a criminal justice associate professor at Lakeland Community College where he also teaches crisis intervention in the college’s basic police academy program and sits on the Cuyahoga County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board. AAs a member of the Cuyahoga County Ohio Mental Health Court Initiative Committee, he assisted in the development of the Mental Health Court Docket Model presented at the state’s Eight District Judicial Conference in 2002.

Chief John Carpenter contributed the Foreword and is formerly the campus police chief at San Diego State University.
